17 November
Pope Francis describes the World Day of the Poor as "a pastoral opportunity not to be underestimated, for it challenges every believer to listen to the prayer of the poor, becoming aware of their presence and needs." Highlighting the Book of Sirach, a book of the wisdom tradition that highlights the relationship between God, humanity, and the world, Francis explains, "we need to make the prayer of the poor our own and pray together with them."
As you prepare to pray, spend a few moments in silence. Reflect on where or how you can be more attentive to those who are poor in your own life.
Let us pray—
God who is our eternal caregiver,
While the world insists we make a name for ourselves at any cost, help us to know the name You have spoken to us since before we were born: Beloved. Humble our hearts so that we can know deeply that we are Yours and that we are nothing without the life You offer.
O Tender One, no one is excluded from Your heart. Each of us is held attentively in Your care. Strengthen us with the courage to 'keep the little details of love' so that those who are poor may know that they, too, are deeply loved.
By us.
By You.
Beloved.
We ask this through your Son, Jesus: AMEN.
