Ascension to acquire southwest Michigan critical access hospital

Ascension plans to acquire Allegan Healthcare Group of southwest Michigan. The organizations have signed a letter of intent for Allegan to join Ascension Michigan, an Ascension subsidiary that now includes 15 hospitals and a network of other sites.

The organizations are not disclosing potential terms of the deal, nor are they discussing target timing for its completion.

Allegan is an independent, nonprofit organization that includes the 25-bed Allegan General Hospital, which is a critical access hospital in Allegan, Mich. Allegan also includes a professional health services organization employing 17 primary care providers as well as a foundation.

Allegan General was founded in 1938. The community of Allegan where it is located has a population of about 5,000. It is in Allegan County, with a population of about 116,000.

Allegan General is located about 30 miles from Kalamazoo, Mich., where Ascension Michigan operates Ascension Borgess Hospital.
