GRANT
The Walking Forward Program — part of the Avera Cancer Institute Center for Precision Oncology — has received a three-year, $1.6 million-plus grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. Walking Forward will use the funds to increase lung cancer screening rates among high-risk smokers living in western South Dakota. Funds will advance Walking Forward's research on lung cancer prevention and will improve access to advanced lung cancer screening technology. A researcher developed Walking Forward to address the high cancer mortality rates among American Indians in western South Dakota, but also to address such concerns among the broader population in that area. The Avera Cancer Institute is part of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health.
