The goal of the Farm at St. Joe’s is to give patients, visitors, and associates the opportunity to understand the link between food production and food-related diseases, while supplying healthy, locally produced food. The farm supports the community by focusing on healthy lifestyles through education, healthy eating, volunteer opportunities and environmental responsibility. Having converted a portion of the hospital campus into a working farm, Saint Joseph Mercy is increasing the fresh produce consumed by patients, visitors, staff and community members. In addition to decreasing adult and pediatric obesity, the educational program and presence of a farm on the hospital campus defines the hospital’s commitment to being good stewards of the land and resources while supporting other farmers and the local economy and providing spiritual revitalization for volunteers.
