Does it count as community benefit? What are the guiding principles for reporting (and not reporting) community benefit programs? This webinar will review the basic guidelines from the IRS Form 990, Schedule H, Instructions and from CHA's Guide for Planning and Reporting Community Benefit. We will review the categories of community benefit and what should and should not be reported in each. In addition, we will go over recent questions submitted to the CHA What Counts Hotline and some of the "gray areas" of community benefit.


Objectives

The purpose of this webinar is to:

  • Describe the criteria for determining whether a program or activity is a community benefit
  • Give examples of recommended activities that should and should not be reported within categories of community benefit

Trina Hackensmith
Vice President
Lyon Software

Trina Hackensmith joined Lyon Software in February 2006. With a background in finance, computer networking and customer relations, she initially served in technical and customer support. Within several months, Ms. Hackensmith transitioned into training hospitals, health systems, senior living communities and colleges and universities how to use Lyon Software's CBISA (Community Benefit Inventory for Social Accountability) program. She now serves as vice president and lead trainer for Lyon Software and enjoys travelling throughout the country meeting and training community benefit champions. Before joining Lyon Software, she enjoyed a long career in the mortgage banking industry.

Ms. Hackensmith also serves on CHA's What Counts Task Force that provides community benefit reporting guidance to the field.

Ms. Hackensmith graduated from Liberty University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in finance.

Julie Trocchio, MSN
Senior Director, Community Benefit and Continuing Care
Catholic Health Association

Julie Trocchio is senior director of community benefit and continuing care at the Catholic Health Association of the United States. She is based in CHA's Washington, D.C., office where she carries out programmatic and advocacy activities related to community benefit, tax exemption, environmental sustainability and long-term care.

Before joining CHA, she was director of delivery of services at the American Health Care Association and a public health nurse for the Montgomery County Health Department in Rockville, Maryland. Ms. Trocchio earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Georgetown University and a master's degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing.

Certificate of Attendance

Please note: CHA does not offer Continuing Education Units (CEU) for any programs. Participants will receive an email with information on how to acquire a Certificate of Attendance following the program (typically included in the program evaluation email). Certificates of Attendance may be submitted to relevant organizations that accept proof of contact hours as credit. These include:

American College of Healthcare Executives: American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) members may self-report qualifying CEUs using the contact hour information provided on their CHA Certificate of Attendance. To self-report, log in as a member on the ACHE site; use the link on the left-hand side to self-report applicable contact hours for CEU credit.

NACC Board Certified Chaplains: National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) board certified chaplain members may self-report their continuing education hours (CEH's) using the contact hours information provided on their CHA Certificate of Attendance.
