Navigating the New Wired World: An Exploration of the Ethical Considerations of Online Searching for Patient Information

Nov. 19, 2019
Noon - 1 p.m. ET

Facebook posts, Twitter feeds, Instagram and Snapchat photos, Google Map apps, and open-access journalism sites – we are surrounded by readily accessible websites where information about our patients and their families can be found. Given the likelihood that most health care professionals have smartphones, computers and tablets within arm's reach, the urge to quickly look online to find out more about patients' backgrounds, activities and personal lives may be great.

What are the ethical implications of this type of activity? Does searching for patient information online have a place in the health care arena? How could patients' care benefit from this type of information gathering, and what is at risk in the patient-provider relationship? This webinar will focus on what is known about patient-targeted Googling (PTG) and will explore the related ethical considerations. In addition, this program will include an example of how one organization developed a critical thinking tool to help professionals determine whether PTG activities are ethically appropriate.
