Record $50 million donation to support expansion at Providence Mission Hospital

A rendering shows a multiphase expansion of the main campus of Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, California, which is expected to open in 2030. A $50 million donation from Rancho Mission Viejo will support the project, and the taller building in the center of campus will be named the Rancho Mission Viejo Family Tower.

Providence Mission Hospital Foundation has received  a landmark $50 million gift to support a multiphase expansion of its main campus in Mission Viejo, California.

The donation came from  Rancho Mission Viejo. The 23,000-acre ranch in Orange County, California, includes a nature reserve and multiple mixed-use villages of residential homes.

In 1969, Rancho Mission Viejo donated the tract in Mission Viejo for Providence Mission Hospital. The hospital later added a second campus in Laguna Beach, California.

The $50 million gift is the largest gift in the hospital's history and was announced in March at a surprise ceremony.

"This gift is transformational for Providence Mission Hospital," said Nicole Balsamo, president and chief philanthropy officer, Providence Mission Hospital Foundation. "The power of philanthropy enables the hospital to continue to innovate."

The expansion will include a new building, the Rancho Mission Viejo Family Tower. It is expected to open in 2030. The tower will expand the hospital's emergency department capabilities by adding 20 observation beds and expand existing services for intensive care, acute rehabilitation and radiology. It will also have new cardiology department and surgical operating rooms, including the campus' first hybrid operating room, while also adding dozens of patient beds.

"We are truly humbled by the generosity of the Rancho Mission Viejo family for the residents in Orange County and beyond," Seth Teigen, chief executive of Providence Mission Hospital, said in a statement. "On behalf of the entire Providence Mission Hospital family, we thank Rancho Mission Viejo for their commitment to the hospital expansion."
