Physician gives $1 million to birth center

April 1, 2011

The Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Conn., has completed a $2.2 million renovation of its birth center, and has renamed the unit in honor of a philanthropic physician and his late wife.

The Dr. Romeo A. and Lena B. Vidone Birth Center now features updated labor and delivery rooms, postpartum rooms and lobby space — all in calming colors and with soothing lighting. The renovation enhanced the space available to families. The project also added new technology.

Dr. Vidone donated $1 million toward the renovation so that New Haven could have a "fine birthing center like this," he said. He joined Saint Raphael in 1977 as chairman of the pathology department and remained in that post until 2003. He now serves part-time at the hospital as an attending physician.

Vidone visited with his daughter Linda Vidone and Sr. Ann Matthew Lorusso, SC, at the opening celebration for the birth center. Sr. Lorusso is a parish nurse coordinator and a representative of Saint Raphael's sponsoring congregation.
