OBITUARY

Derek Covert, former executive vice president and general counsel for San Francisco-based Dignity Health, died March 29. After providing legal counsel in the 1986 hospital merger that created Catholic Healthcare West, Covert joined the system the following year. Early on, he conceived and created the CHW Medical Foundation to better align physicians with the system's hospitals. More recently, he drew on his knowledge of civil and canon law as a main architect of the governance model for Dignity Health, previously known as Catholic Healthcare West. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and children, Darcy and Ian.
