Bon Secours Health System of Marriottsville, Md., and Mercy Health of Cincinnati, which expect to merge in the fall, have announced that John Starcher Jr. will be president and chief executive of the new organization to be called Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Individual facilities will maintain current names and signage, the systems said in a joint press announcement in late July. The new system will have more than 57,000 employees and upwards of 1,000 sites of care.

Starcher is president and chief executive of Mercy Health, where he has worked for 15 years during which time he was chief executive of three of its four divisions.

Rich Statuto, who is president and chief executive of Bon Secours Health System, will advise the new company on strategic growth and innovation during the merged organization's inaugural year. He plans to retire in 2019. Statuto has held chief executive roles for health systems for more than two decades — with 13 of those years heading Bon Secours. He is a past chair of the CHA board and he received CHA's Sister Concilia Moran Award in 2017.

The board of Bon Secours Mercy Health will be chaired by Chris Allen, who currently chairs Bon Secours Health System's board. Katherine Vestal will be Bon Secours Mercy Health's vice chair. She currently chairs Mercy Health's board.

Bon Secours Mercy Health's public juridic person will be called Bon Secours Mercy Ministries. Sr. Patricia Eck, CBS, will chair that organization; and Sr. Doris Gottemoeller, RSM, will be vice chair. Sr. Eck currently chairs Bon Secours Health System's public juridic person, Bon Secours Ministries, and is congregation leader of the Sisters of Bon Secours of Paris. Sr. Gottemoeller chairs Mercy Health's public juridic person, Partners in Catholic Health Ministries.

Bon Secours Health System owns, manages or has joint ventures involving 20 hospitals in Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, Kentucky, Florida and New York. Mercy Health has 23 hospitals in Ohio and Kentucky.
