Three Tampa-area Trinity hospitals undertake expansions

December 1, 2018

Three Trinity Health hospitals in the Tampa, Fla., area are expanding to accommodate rapid population growth and related increased demand for health care services along the central west coast of Florida.

St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa began a $126 million construction project in the spring that will modernize its facility and add 90 private patient rooms to bring the hospital's bed count to 576. The hospital is building a six-story tower with three patient care floors. Other floors will have additional classroom and conference space, waiting rooms and other facilities.

Three floors and the basement of the tower will connect to the existing hospital. The project includes the construction of an elevated, enclosed pedestrian bridge to connect the new patient tower on the main campus to the St. Joseph's Women's Hospital, which is separated from the main building by a busy boulevard. Currently, the women's hospital must transfer patients to the main hospital by ambulance; and pedestrians must use a street-level crosswalk.

St. Joseph's Hospital will complete the expansion in early 2020.

St. Joseph's Hospital — South in River-view, Fla., is adding a five-story patient tower and finishing out some shelled space at its three-year-old campus. The $112 million construction project will bring the facility's bed count to 192 from 114.

The project, to be completed in 2020, includes the addition of an operating room, a catheterization lab and new equipment in the emergency department, including a CT scanner, ultrasound equipment and X-ray.

St. Joseph's Hospital — North in Lutz, Fla., is to complete its $70 million expansion in August. The construction on the eight-year-old campus will add two patient care floors with all-private rooms, build out four shelled operating room suites and expand the hospital's ancillary services areas. The renovation will increase that facility's bed count to 216 from 108.
