Hamel to retire as CHA senior ethicist

Ron Hamel will retire as senior ethicist for CHA at year's end.

Since he joined CHA 16 years ago, Hamel has been instrumental in developing resources on the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, genomic medicine and ethical decision making. He has assisted ministry organizations with ethics consultations and has presented to them on a wide variety of ethics topics.He has been CHA's primary ethics liaison to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Hamel has lectured worldwide on ethics subjects.

Hamel is editor of the Health Care Ethics USA electronic newsletter. He has written more than 50 journal articles, 25 columns and 10 book reviews and edited several books on ethics.

Prior to joining CHA, Hamel directed the Department of Clinical Ethics at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill. Previously, he was senior associate for theology, ethics and clinical practice at Park Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith and Ethics in Chicago. Before that, he was an associate professor of Christian ethics for the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
