Gilfillan to depart as Trinity chief executive; Slubowski to succeed him

January 15, 2019

Trinity Health Chief Executive Dr. Richard Gilfillan will leave the Livonia, Mich.-based system in June. Michael A. Slubowski, Trinity Health's president and chief operating officer, will succeed Gilfillan, effective July 1. Trinity has not yet announced who will follow Slubowski as president and chief operating officer.

In a release announcing the leadership succession, Trinity Health said Gilfillan is leaving Trinity Health because "he decided it is time to be more present at home with his family" in Washington, D.C., and New York.

The system's board praised Gilfillan's "bold and innovative leadership" in transforming Trinity Health from an organization centered primarily on acute care to one that spans the continuum of care and focuses on population health management, community health and the social determinants of health. Under Gilfillan's leadership, Trinity Health grew from an 82-hospital system with annual operating revenue of $13.3 billion in fiscal year 2013 to a 94-hospital organization with operating revenue of $18.3 billion in fiscal year 2018.

Gilfillan joined Trinity Health as its president and chief executive in 2013, shortly after the merger of Trinity Health and Catholic Health East. Previously, he directed the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. And prior to that position, he'd worked in insurance and health system leadership, and as a physician.

Slubowski rejoined Trinity in May 2017. He'd been president and chief executive of Broomfield, Colo.-based SCL Health. Before leading that system, he'd worked at Trinity for 13 years, including as president of its hospital and health networks. His pre-Trinity executive leadership history included positions at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit; St. Joseph's Hospital in Macomb County, Mich.; Samaritan Health Services in Phoenix; Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich.; and Mercy Health Services of Farmington Hills, Mich. Mercy Health Services was a predecessor organization of Trinity.

Slubowski chairs CHA's Board of Trustees.
