Following the October announcement that Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, plans to retire this summer as CHA president and chief executive officer, the CHA Board of Trustees has begun the process of recruiting her successor. The board has named a search committee and retained the executive search firm of Witt/Kieffer to assist in recruiting candidates for the top post.
The search committee is comprised of 15 people representing CHA's membership, and it is supported by two senior CHA staff members. The committee includes members of the CHA board, Catholic health system executives, a Catholic bishop, and a leader of a sponsoring congregation.
Witt/Kieffer specializes in recruiting leaders for not-for-profit health care organizations, including health care associations and faith-based health systems. The executive search firm has worked extensively with CHA in the past and was involved in the 2005 search that resulted in Sr. Carol's appointment as CHA's president and chief executive officer.
The CHA Board of Trustees, the search committee and Witt/Kieffer staff met in December to discuss and develop the job description, characteristics and experience profile for the position as well as set a target timeline for the search process. Witt/Kieffer surveyed a large and diverse group of CHA stakeholders last month to get broad input on leadership traits they would like the new CHA head to possess. The input was incorporated into the job description/leadership profile.
The CHA Board of Trustees is responsible for hiring the next president and chief executive. "As the search for a new CEO proceeds, we will keep the CHA membership updated on our progress," said Michael A. Slubowski, president and chief operating officer of Trinity Health, and CHA board chair. He said the board hopes to have a final candidate selected in the coming months, with the goal of formally introducing the new president and chief executive at the Catholic Health Assembly in Dallas in June.
