GIFTS AND GRANTS

Providence Tarzana Medical Center of Tarzana, Calif., is using a $500,000 donation from the Chase Foundation to create a new playroom and program for pediatric patients and their families. The program will be staffed by a Child Life specialist who will address the social, emotional and developmental needs of pediatric patients and provide their parents with resources. The family of Chase Richards, a child who died of brain cancer at age two, established the foundation in his memory in 1992.

The Hench Foundation has granted $200,000 to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center's Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center in Burbank, Calif. The facility has used the funds to acquire a bio specimen repository that can hold up to 45,000 specimens. Liquid nitrogen cools the bio specimen freezer, protecting blood and tissues for optimum research conditions. Providence will save genetic material in this bank so that researchers can use it to study cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders and other illnesses.
