Trinity unit acquires skilled nursing, independent living facilities

March 15, 2013

On March 1, the long-term care division of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health acquired two facilities in Livonia from the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamburg, N.Y. The organizations did not disclose the purchase price.

According to Sr. Ann Marie Hudzina, FSSJ, general minister of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, the congregation sought a new sponsor for the 55-bed Marycrest Manor skilled nursing facility and the 60-unit Marycrest Heights independent living facility because the congregation no longer could "provide what was needed for the growth and expansion that the facilities were positioned for." So, she said, the sisters sought a potential sponsor with the financial capacity and stability to improve the Marycrest facilities. The congregation also wanted the new sponsor to commit to the facilities' Catholic identity and embrace the sisters' Franciscan heritage and values.

The unit making the acquisition, Trinity Senior Living Communities, owns and manages 33 senior facilities. The unit recently increased its business activity, entering into a management contract with the Catholic St. Francis Senior Ministries in Tiffin, Ohio, and acquiring the Catholic Alverno Health Care Facility, a long-term care campus in Clinton, Iowa. Trinity Senior Living Communities leaders said they are able to work with Catholic facilities to ensure their mission continues as health care reform is enacted and the long-term care field becomes more competitive.
