The system includes the 425-bed Good Shepherd Medical Center — Longview and the 149-bed Good Shepherd Medical Center — Marshall as well as the Good Shepherd Medical Associates physician network, multiple freestanding emergency and trauma centers and a network of other outpatient sites.

The acquisition is part of ongoing CHRISTUS growth in eastern Texas. In May 2016, CHRISTUS acquired Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics of Tyler, Texas, which is now called CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. And in July 2016, CHRISTUS formed a joint operating company with a Sulphur Springs, Texas, hospital district that had owned Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. CHRISTUS acquired a 51 percent stake in that facility, which now is called CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital — Sulphur Springs.

Under the newest acquisition, which was finalized Feb. 1, Good Shepherd facilities became Catholic and adhere to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. The hospitals are adding "CHRISTUS" at the start of their names. The physician network has joined CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic, the provider organization connected with CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

According to Katy Kiser, CHRISTUS' communications manager, the Good Shepherd system's board of directors will remain in place. Good Shepherd's president and chief executive, Steve Altmiller, has resigned.

Effective Feb. 1, Todd Hancock took over as market president and chief executive of the CHRISTUS Good Shepherd subsystem. He was CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System senior vice president and regional chief executive. Jason Adams is chief operating officer, having worked as regional chief operating officer for CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, N.M.
