CHRISTUS Health is closing this San Antonio facility, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital — Medical Center, by April 25.CHRISTUS Health is set to close its 174-bed hospital in San Antonio by April 25. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word had opened CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital — Medical Center in 1869.
CHRISTUS Health said in a press release that it decided to shutter the facility, which is part of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System, after evaluating the medical center’s operations and the evolving needs of the community. For instance, the evaluation
showed that the beds at the medical center are only about one-third full, on average.
Despite the impending closure, “we remain committed to our mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and will continue to serve the community through our other facilities and services,” Grant Wicklund, CEO of CHRISTUS Santa
Rosa Health System, said in the release.
The release notes that CHRISTUS Health has invested more than $300 million in strategic capital in facilities across CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System’s catchment area in the past five years. That subsystem serves a population of about 2.3 million
people in Bexar, Comal and Hays counties. The investments in the region have included a new tower that is to open in May at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital — Westover Hills; advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment and a bolstering of critical
care and emergency department services at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital — Alamo Heights; and additional expansions of hospital facilities, ambulatory facilities and the physician network in multiple South Texas communities.
According to CHRISTUS Health, the new tower in Westover Hills will significantly expand the health system’s footprint and services in one of the region’s fastest growing areas. That tower will replace all the beds that will be decommissioned
with the closing of the medical center.
The release says CHRISTUS Health will help staff displaced by the closure find jobs at the system’s other facilities.
