Eleven Catholic health facilities were among the health care providers that earned or successfully renewed their Magnet status in 2016.
The American Nurses Credentialing Center grants Magnet status to hospitals that demonstrate by meeting a series of credentialing standards that they provide quality patient care and that they have an excellent and innovative nursing practice.
Ministry facilities accredited or reaccredited with the status in 2016 were:
- Mercy Health — St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, Boardman, Ohio
- Mercy Health — St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Youngstown, Ohio
- Mercy Health — St. Joseph Warren Hospital, Warren, Ohio
- Mercy Health Youngstown, Youngstown, Ohio
- Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore
- Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital, Binghamton, N.Y.
- Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Joliet, Ill.
- Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, Torrance, Calif.
- Saint Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick, N.J.
- St. Joseph Hospital, Orange, Calif.
- St. Vincent Evansville, formerly St. Mary's Medical Center, Evansville, Ind.
A facility's Magnet designation lasts four years, at which time the facility can apply to renew the status.
According to information from the credentialing center, there are 448 Magnet facilities. The credentialing center says Magnet facilities are shown to better attract and retain top talent; improve patient care, safety and satisfaction; foster a collaborative culture; advance nursing standards; grow their business; and improve their finances.
