App provides nutrition details

May 15, 2016

The “Bite” app serves up nutrition facts on menu items at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital café.

Diners in the café at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital now can use a mobile app to get nutrition information and an ingredient list for each item the café is serving that day.

Asha Faulkner, director of the Belleville, Ill.-based hospital’s food and nutrition department, said the app enables patrons to make healthy selections.

App users also can rate the food items and note their favorites. They can receive alerts when the café next serves those top picks.

The cafeteria posts some basic nutritional information for its food. However, in the past, diners who wanted more detail had to go online to search for the items, or they had to wait for café staff to research ingredients. Also, the new app allows access to that information from virtually anywhere, so people can plan their food choices prior to going to the cafeteria.
