Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, president and chief executive officer of CHA, is the 2018 recipient of
Commonweal Magazine's Catholic in the Public Square Award. At its Oct. 22 "Commonweal Conversations" fundraising dinner in New York City, the magazine honored Sr. Carol for her "passionate and influential advocacy for equitable access to health care, especially among those in greatest need, and for maintaining the strong and compassionate traditions of Catholic health care in the U.S." Cardinal Joseph Tobin, archbishop of Newark, N.J., former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joseph Biden sent video tributes. Obama and Biden both said Sr. Carol and CHA's advocacy was pivotal in the passage of the Affordable Care Act, and they commended her for being a voice for the voiceless. Here, she is flanked by event co-chairs Tim Welsh, left, U.S. Bank’s vice chairman of consumer banking sales and support, and Dr. Rod Hochman, president and chief executive officer of Providence St. Joseph Health.
