Intermountain Health has unveiled design plans for the replacement for its hospital in Billings, Montana.

Workers are expected to break ground for the new Intermountain St. Vincent Regional Hospital this spring. It is expected to be completed in 2029.

The new 14-floor, 737,000-square-foot facility will be east of the current hospital. The new hospital will fully replace the old one and the services offered there. An estimated cost for the hospital was not available.

"As a leader in Montana health care, we are thrilled to break ground in 2025 on our brand new hospital in Billings," Lee Boyles, president of Intermountain St. Vincent Regional Hospital and the Montana and Wyoming market of Intermountain Health, said in a statement. "Building a replacement hospital affords a once-in-a-generation opportunity to take all we know about modern health care and design a hospital for high-quality, efficient care for decades to come."

The new facility will have 243 patient beds with space to add 16 more. The design is adaptable. Patient rooms can be converted into intensive care unit-level spaces and operating rooms are designed to handle changes in technology.

The whole first floor will be a dedicated public space for patients and visitors, including a chapel, outpatient pharmacy, gift shop and discharge lounge. The emergency department entrance will be secure and separate from the public entrance, and the floors will feature decentralized nursing stations, allowing caregivers to be closer to patients.

"What excites me about this project is the 'why' behind it. We are doing this to elevate health care in our area for future generations of Montanans," Dustin Strandell, chief operating officer of Intermountain St. Vincent Regional Hospital, said in a statement. "The design you see today is the result of hundreds of meetings over the course of two years and includes insights and input from many of our talented providers, caregivers and experts."
