October 2024

Mercy is undertaking a $75 million project to expand the emergency department of Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis.

Chesterfield, Missouri-based Mercy plans to expand and redesign the emergency department of Mercy Hospital South, which is in St. Louis County. The construction is to be complete in spring 2027.

The project will grow the emergency department to 65,000 square feet from 39,000 square feet. The construction will increase the emergency department bed count to 73 from 61 and will expand the size of Mercy Hospital South's three trauma bays and add three more. The project also will add three behavioral health beds, bringing the count to 13. The emergency department waiting area will be larger.

According to a press release, Mercy Hospital South is undertaking the project to meet growing demand for emergency department services. The release says the department is among the region's busiest, with more than 67,000 visits in the past fiscal year. The department treats about 1,000 more patients per month compared to 2023. The department also is seeing higher-acuity patients than in the past.

Sean Hogan, Mercy Hospital South president, says that Mercy leadership believes this significant increase reflects "the growing trust the community and EMS providers have in us to provide high-quality care."
