Denver's St. Anthony opens hospital

September 1, 2011

St. Anthony Central Hospital has completed construction of a $435 million replacement hospital six miles away from its Denver location. That facility moved most of its operations to the new campus in Lakewood, Colo., in June.

The new St. Anthony Hospital is a Level I trauma center with intensive care, medical surgical units and inpatient rehabilitation. The facility's emergency department is triple the size of the Denver one. The new campus has the same 222 bed count that the legacy campus had.

The Lakewood campus also includes the 48-bed OrthoColorado Hospital for orthopedic care and two medical office buildings that will be open by late October.

St. Anthony Hospital is part of Englewood, Colo.-based Centura Health. Centura is cosponsored by Catholic Health Initiatives, and by Adventist Health System. Hospital leaders said it was necessary to replace St. Anthony Central because that campus was landlocked and more than a century old. It was not designed to accommodate today's technology.

St. Anthony Hospital has put the Denver site up for sale but continues to offer some services there. They are considering a sale scenario in which they could continue offering urgent care, primary care, imaging, specialty clinics and community health education services at a redeveloped campus.

Raymond Mencini is interim president and chief executive of St. Anthony Hospital. He said the new hospital is a remarkable venue at which the hospital's physicians, caregivers, associates and volunteers can continue the mission that the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration started in the Mile High City 119 years ago. That mission is to provide faith-centered care to people in need.
