Prayer Service — Releasing the Holy Spirit

January-February 2005

BY: ANNE BELLAN

CALL TO PRAYER

Leader
Spirit of God, strengthen us to be channels of love to others.

ALL
Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

READING

Antiphon: God, with you at my side, nothing can shake me (Ps 16).

SIDE 1
Protect me, God, because I come to you for safety. I say, "You are my God; all the good things I have come from you."

Antiphon: God, with you at my side, nothing can shake me.

SIDE 2
How wonderful are your faithful people! My greatest pleasure is to be with them.

Antiphon: God, with you at my side nothing can shake me.

SIDE 1
Those who rush to other gods bring many troubles on themselves. I will not take part in their sacrifices; I will not worship their gods.

Antiphon: God, with you at my side nothing can shake me.

READING

A reading from Luke: "So I say to you, ask and you shall receive; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For whoever asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is admitted. What parent among you will give their child a snake if she asks for an egg? If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more will the Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" (Lk 11:9-13).

REFLECTION

How are we aware of God's release of the Spirit in us? What is the effect on us and on the community?

SHARING ON THE REFLECTION

CLOSING

Leader
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.

RESPONSE
And kindle in them the fire of your love.

Leader
Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.

RESPONSE
And you will renew the face of the earth.

Leader
Let us pray:
Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit,
help us to relish what is right
and always rejoice in our consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
