Catholic Charities Requests Assistance at Border

"We have all been so concerned about the plight of so many families at our border, fleeing violence and extreme poverty only to be met with sometimes harsh treatment and miserable living situations. The problem seems to be getting worse  and Sr. Donna Markham, President of CCUSA has sent this information and plea to many in hopes of finding help for these vulnerable families."
- Sr. Carol Keehan, DC

March 14, 2019 — Catholic Charities USA staff who returned from Laredo this week report that the influx of migrants has created an untenable situation in the Laredo sector of the border, where their small Catholic Charities agency is trying to cope with hundreds of additional migrants daily (they were prepared to receive 200 people/day but now are receiving over 500/day). Their donated supplies have been depleted. They are in desperate need of:

  • FOOD - canned chicken noodle soup, pinto beans, fruit cocktail, corn tortillas, water]
  • CLOTHING - Children and Adults—Men and Women in Small, Medium and Large (No XL)
  • SHOES - all sizes except very large
  • BELTS and SHOELACES (these are taken away in the detention center)
  • DIAPERS - all sizes
  • MONETARY DONATIONS

There is also a great need for Spanish-speaking volunteers who might be able to spend a month in Laredo. If anyone wishes to volunteer, they can contact Kristan Schlichte at: [email protected]

Any donations of goods from  Amazon, Walmart, etc. can be sent to:
